Les Crus du Beaujolais

A single grape variety gives life to all the Beaujolais appellations: Gamay noir à jus blanc.

This grape variety present in Beaujolais since the beginning of the 17th century, it has been able to accompany the evolutions of the vineyard and collective cultural traditions. And it is of course on the clay-limestone soils and granite terrains of Beaujolais that the grape variety has found its favorite land.

Formerly nicknamed petit Gamay, round Gamay or even Bourguignon noir, this resistant and fertile grape variety requires constant care to maintain its vigor and control its yields. Its development depends on a tight planting density, between 6,000 and 13,000 vines per hectare.

Gamay noir à jus blanc feeds the creation of 12 appellations: “Beaujolais” and “Beaujolais villages”, mainly available as primeur wines through Beaujolais nouveau and Beaujolais-villages nouveau, and 10 crus indexed to their terroirs.

The “tender” ones: Chiroubles, Fleurie and Saint-Amour, like the “robust” ones: Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly, Juliénas, Régnié, Chénas, Morgon and Moulin-à-Vent are often characterized by aromas of red fruits, gooseberry and spices, an intense length in the mouth which is discovered when these wines “have had their Easter” and have benefited from a few months of aging before bottling.
